Participants are placed on teams and challenged to create an original Student Film within a very limited amount of time. Each team must incorporate assigned elements such as a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a downtown filming location.
The students are responsible for developing the story, writing the script, planning the shots, filming the scenes and completing the editing process—all while working against the clock. It is a fast-paced introduction to the realities of creative production, where time management, communication and flexibility are just as important as technical ability.
For students enrolled in digital media and video production programs through Marion County Public Schools, the Derby transforms classroom instruction into practical experience. It allows them to test their skills in an environment that feels much closer to a professional film set than a typical school assignment.
Mentorship That Can Change a Student’s Direction
One of the Derby’s most valuable components is Student Mentorship. Local filmmakers, photographers, editors, educators and media professionals work alongside the teams, offering guidance without taking over the creative process.
That distinction matters. Students are encouraged to solve problems, make decisions and take ownership of the finished film. Along the way, they gain a clearer understanding of the many careers available in visual storytelling—including writing, directing, cinematography, sound, lighting, acting, editing and production management.

A Community Becomes the Classroom
Downtown shops, restaurants, cultural organizations and public spaces help turn Downtown Ocala into a working film location. This involvement gives students the experience of filming in real businesses, communicating with property owners and adapting creatively to unfamiliar surroundings.
